How to Talk About NDA Work in a Portfolio Without Saying Nothing

5 min read

Most of the best design work never makes it into a public portfolio. NDA constraints are a reality for anyone who works on commercially sensitive products — which is most designers working in enterprise, fintech, healthcare, or at large organisations. The question is how to show the work without breaching the agreement.

Understand What the NDA Actually Covers

Before you assume you can't show anything, read what you signed. Most NDAs protect confidential business information, unreleased product details, and financial data — not design process. Your sketches, your research synthesis, your iteration decisions, and your problem framing are often yours to share. If in doubt, ask the client or employer directly. Many will grant permission for portfolio use with minor modifications — they just need to be asked.

Redact, Don't Delete

Sensitive content can often be redacted or replaced with representative stand-ins while preserving the design integrity. Real user data replaced with fictional equivalents. Branded UI with neutral placeholders. Internal system names replaced with generic labels. The design decisions — layout, hierarchy, interaction model — remain visible even when specific content doesn't. This is usually enough to demonstrate what hiring managers need to see.

Tell the Story Around the Work

Even if you can show nothing at all, you can still write about the project in general terms. The domain, the scale of the problem, the constraints you navigated, what you learned, and what you'd do differently. This approach works especially well in a written case study or in an interview context. 'I can't show you the screens due to NDA, but I can walk you through my process and the decisions that shaped the final direction' is a legitimate and respectable answer.

Have a Conversation, Not a Presentation

NDA work shows best in conversation. Prepare to talk about it — the problem, the process, the outcome — without visuals. Practise describing a design decision in words specific enough that an interviewer can picture it. 'We moved from a tabbed navigation to a single scrolling page because users were missing content they didn't know to look for' is a concrete, visual description that works without screenshots.

Build New Work to Fill the Gap

If your NDA constraints mean your portfolio has a genuine gap — a type of work you do well but can't show — create speculative or personal work to fill it. A redesign of a public product, a design challenge, or a personal project in the relevant domain all demonstrate capability. Recruiters and hiring managers understand speculative work for what it is. A portfolio with one strong speculative piece is better than one with nothing in the relevant domain.
