Most designers I know have had at least one moment where they looked up and thought: how did I end up here? Maybe you took a role that sounded senior but turned out to be glorified production work. Maybe you spent two years at a company where design had no seat at the table. Maybe you burned out, took a step back, and now your portfolio looks thin. None of that is fatal. But it does require an honest reckoning before anything else.

The instinct when a career goes wrong is to move fast — update the CV, apply everywhere, say yes to the first offer. I've done it. It rarely helps. You tend to replicate the same mistake in a different context. The more useful first step is to slow down and figure out what actually happened.

Diagnose before you prescribe

Design careers go sideways in a handful of recognisable ways. Being honest about which one applies to you shapes everything that comes next:

• You drifted into the wrong specialism. You started as a product designer, picked up some service design work because it was available, and now your portfolio is a mixed bag that doesn't tell a coherent story. Hiring managers don't know what to do with you.
• You optimised for the wrong things. Salary, title, prestige. You joined a well-known company where design was an afterthought and spent three years shipping work you're not proud of. Your title says Senior but your skills haven't moved.
• You stalled in a comfort zone. The work was fine. No major friction. But fine for five years means you've been coasting, and now you're competing against people who've been pushing themselves.
• You had a public setback. A layoff, a failed project, a role that ended badly. The event itself is rarely the problem — it's the gap or the narrative around it.

Once you've named it accurately, you can address it specifically rather than throwing spaghetti at the wall.

Rebuilding the portfolio is usually the wrong starting point

When designers feel stuck, they fixate on the portfolio. They redesign it. They add case studies. They agonise over the layout. I'm not saying the portfolio doesn't matter — it does — but for most people in recovery mode, it's the wrong lever to pull first.

The portfolio is downstream of the work. If the work has been weak, shallow, or misaligned, polishing how you present it won't fix the underlying gap. Hiring managers and design leads can smell a thin case study. They see them constantly.

What actually moves the needle in recovery:

• Do a piece of real work that stretches you — a side project with actual constraints, a freelance engagement, a contribution to an open source product. Something you can talk about in depth.
• Talk to people in roles you want. Not to network in the hollow sense, but to understand what skills those jobs actually require versus what the job descriptions say.
• Get honest external feedback on your existing work. Not from friends. From someone who will tell you what's actually weak.

Stop comparing to a linear trajectory

One thing that makes a derailed career feel worse than it is: the mythology of the clean upward line. You see someone's LinkedIn and it reads like a deliberate march from junior to principal, every role building on the last. That's rarely how it actually happened. It's retrospective narrative.

I've taken roles that felt like lateral moves at the time and turned out to be the most formative things I did. I've taken roles that looked like promotions and were quietly damaging. The direction is less important than what you're building: craft, judgment, a clear point of view.

If your career has gone sideways, the question isn't how to get back on the original trajectory. It's what trajectory actually makes sense given what you now know about yourself and the work. That reorientation — uncomfortable as it is — is where recovery actually starts.
